Those in the know may wonder about the absence of Ask, Sir Michael Stoute’s seven-year-old champion runner. While Ask is widely considered a strong contender for this race but is as yet excluded from the odds as his connections are uncertain about their charges health. While Ask is a fine runner and in great shape, his last appearance in the Gold Cup at Ascot saw him weakening suddenly after travelling very well. Whether or not Ask is deemed fit enough to run in this year’s Lonsdale Cup is yet to be seen.
Current favourite King Of Wands, trained by John Gosden and paired with jockey William Buick, is ready for the challenge whether Ask starts or not. 2010 saw the four-year-old run winning races in the Conditions Stakes at Ripon and in Sandown’s Coral Marathon. In the Coral Marathon, King Of Wands left behind Illustrious Blue (who placed second), Opinion Poll (who placed third) and Samuel – all of whom are going to challenge him again this afternoon.
Seven-year-old Illustrious Blue from the training stables of William Knight is another contender you should keep an eye on. This runner has competed in 51 professional races since bursting onto the scene, winning ten of them, placing second ten times and making third place in seven races. His most recent victory was recorded in the Artemis Goodwood Cup in July, when Illustrious Blue left behind a field of ten including this afternoon’s challengers Electrolyser and Free Agent. After such a prestigious win it is likely that Illustrious Blue is gunning to give jockey Jim Crowley the ride of a lifetime.
